It is with some reluctance that I write to inform you that we have made the decision to convert the entire Pathway School to virtual learning beginning tomorrow, Tuesday January 11, 2022.聽 This morning, 20 staff members tested positive for COVID-19, and were sent home to quarantine.聽 A nearly identical number of staff tested positive last week, many of whom are still in quarantine.聽 Nearly 50% of our students are absent today due to quarantine or due to concerns regarding the infectiousness of the current COVID-19 variant.聽 Public Health officials have advised us to expect both of those numbers to increase over the next several weeks.聽 Based upon these numbers, I do not believe we can safely or effectively operate in person learning, and have had to make the decision to transition to virtual learning.

For planning purposes, tomorrow, Tuesday January 11, 2022 will be an asynchronous learning day for students, with synchronous learning to begin in earnest on Wednesday, January 12, 2022.听听

As of right now, we will operate the school virtually for three weeks.聽 Our plan and our hope is to reopen fully to in-person learning on Monday, January 31, 2022, but we will make a final decision based upon staff and student health the preceding week.

We are aware that for many of our students virtual learning is not ideal.聽 As was the case last year, Pathway educators and support professionals will do everything they can to make this transition as smooth as possible鈥攆or everyone.

We are also aware of the burden this presents to our families.聽 We attempted to keep the school open and functioning as best we could.聽 In the past week, we have made numerous adjustments to the school day to keep incidental contact to a minimum, while offering each student full and robust class offerings.聽 It is our intent and our goal to make this adjustment to virtual learning as brief as possible for all.

Over the last several weeks, my leadership team and I have met regarding our campus reopening plans. Additionally, I have been in contact with the state and local Departments of Health regarding guidance to schools during the continued spike of COVID-19 cases in the region. Frankly, their guidance was somewhat inconsistent.

Here is what I mean by that. The metrics that the CDC and Department of Health use when offering school guidance would indicate that all schools in the region, frankly, should remain 100% virtual/remote learning and closed to in-person learning. Both governmental agencies have offered additional guidance that schools, especially elementary, middle, and special education schools, should consider a phased re-opening if possible.

Based upon this mixed message, 91探花视频 has chosen to move back its campus reopening date to Monday, February 1, 2021, rather than Tuesday, January 19, 2021. The shift in dates, undoubtedly NOT good news to many of you, will afford us a little more time to make some additional improvements to our campus. We are going to relocate two of our 鈥榝unctional academic鈥� classrooms to larger, unused rooms to promote better social distancing. We are adding wall mounted thermometers to offer hands free temperature checks for our students. We are also finalizing a contract to offer bi-weekly COVID-19 testing to all staff and all students that will be on campus. *We will be sending consent forms to families with students on campus in a week or so.

Beginning on Monday, February 1st we will return to the hybrid learning model that we used during the autumn, 2020 semester. If your student was participating in the hybrid learning model before the break, they will continue in the hybrid model upon our return to campus. If your student was participating in the virtual model, they will continue full time online virtual learning. Our hybrid students in the Emotional Support, Lower School, and Functional Academic cohort will be on campus Mondays and Tuesdays, Wednesday will remain an asynchronous day, and these students will be on a virtual/remote learning schedule on Thursdays and Fridays. Beginning on Monday, February 1st, hybrid students in the Upper School Program will be on the virtual/remote learning schedule Mondays and Tuesdays, Wednesdays will remain an asynchronous day, and these students will be on campus on Thursdays and Fridays.

A few calendar updates and reminders.

• Friday, January 15th was a scheduled noon dismissal for students and will now be a full day off for students.
  Monday, January 18th is MLK Day and school is closed. Please enjoy the long weekend break.
• I know how unsettling changes in plans are for everyone, so my promise to you is that, barring government mandated closures, 91探花视频 will be open and endeavor to remain open for the remainder of the school year.

Here is a quick update for you from 91探花视频.

Our ESY Summer Program begins this Monday, July 6th. I am sure the faculty has been in contact with you regarding your student鈥檚 schedule, etc. We have taken the lessons we learned during this past spring and our plan is to make the ESY Program fun, enjoyable, and educational for our students. We are disappointed that we could not offer in-person, on-campus learning this summer. Please let us know how we can be of help to you and your student. The tech support email and the clinical helpline will be in operation during our ESY Program.

The school鈥檚 leadership team and I have been busy developing our school reopening plan for the fall. As of today, it is our goal to reopen the campus for in-person learning. There are still many, many variables to overcome including bussing, monitoring health conditions, enforcing social distancing, and mask-wearing, to name a few. But we should have a comprehensive plan available for your review and feedback before the end of July.

Like many schools and universities in the area, we are planning for three possibilities this fall: a full reopening of the campus; a hybrid model of on-campus and virtual learning; or a return to virtual learning. It is our preference to operate the school on a full reopening basis, but as a realist, I am aware this decision may not be fully up to us. While we establish plans for each scenario, we continue to monitor the PDE (Pennsylvania Department of Education) and CDC websites for guidance and updates, and we continue to monitor public health websites for the status of COVID-19 rates of infection, as well as updates on the latest scientific information regarding infection transmission and prevention.

Earlier this week, we emailed a questionnaire to staff and to families for input. We truly value your input and will incorporate as much of your feedback as is feasible in our final plan. Please take some time and complete this questionnaire. Thank you!

I hope you are enjoying the improving spring weather and that online learning has not been too difficult for your student or for you. We are officially in the homestretch of the school year. This coming weekend (May 22nd-May 25th) is a 4-day weekend, and then there are three short weeks till the end of the regular school year. Hang in there! We are almost finished!!

Graduation is scheduled for Thursday, June 11th at 4pm. The graduation ceremony will be online with more details to follow. We are proud of the 16 graduates and happy to be celebrating with their families.

The 4th marking period ends shortly. In case you were wondering, your student will be 鈥済raded鈥� on their participation: Outstanding Participation, Satisfactory Participation, and Unsatisfactory Participation. Each distinction has a metric to determine which 鈥済rade鈥� will be given. Your student鈥檚 final grade for the year will be an average of their letter grade for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd marking periods; the 4th marking period 鈥済rades鈥� will not factor into their 2019-20 final grades. All students will earn full academic credit for the year, including time spent learning remotely.

ESY, our Extended School Year summer program, will also be held virtually due to directives from the state Department of Health. The ESY program will have academics and club activities from 9 AM to 1 PM Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, we will offer virtual field trips for those who wish to 鈥渟ee the world鈥� from their living rooms. We know that this is not an ideal situation, and we will do our best to make the summer productive and interesting for your student.

We are currently planning for how we might be able to reopen the campus in September. However, this, unfortunately, is not a guarantee that Pathway鈥檚 campus will physically reopen in September. Whether or not schools can physically reopen is, again, decided by the state Department of Health. I just know that when we are allowed to reopen the campus, it will require substantial planning and implementation effort. As the summer progresses, I will provide you with updates and additional information when I can.

Lastly, I have included our Continuity of Education Plan as an attachment to this email. This is the formal document, required by the state, that outlines our plan for educating our students during this pandemic. Please don鈥檛 feel like you need to read the whole thing, but it is there if you wish to know our plan. It is also posted on the Pathway School website along with other important news and updates.

Thank you for your patience and support during this time of national crisis. We are grateful for the efforts you have put forth and the sacrifices you have made to assist in your student鈥檚 education. Please know that we all really want the campus to reopen and for Pathway to be an in-person school again!!
